Is there anything better than escaping the grey and rainy UK weather for sunnier climes?! That’s exactly what we did at the end of January when we booked an overnight trip to Alicante. Read on for tips on how to travel more with a full time job.

I found our flights to Alicante on Skyscanner which is where I look for all of our flight bargains. I find if you book between 8-12 weeks in advance this seems to be a sweet spot for grabbing a good price.
Visiting Alicante is well known amongst the Extreme Day Trip community as its shortish flight time, quick and cheap airport transfer as well as the sunny weather make it perfect for a quick trip. We decided on an overnight stay and took an early flight out Sunday morning and a late flight back Monday evening – this meant two almost full days to enjoy the sun and sangria but using just one day of annual leave.
Alicante Airport to Alicante
After arriving in Alicante and passing through passport control, you head upstairs in the airport to find the C6 bus which will take you directly to the main marina in the city. It costs around €2 and takes around 35 mins. This bus runs every day and is approximately every 20 minutes. The return journeys to the airport pick up at the same stop where you are dropped off.
We chose to stay in the Casa Alberola hotel when visiting Alicante. The location was excellent, just a couple of minutes from the main promenade and great value for money for a Sunday evening.
Visiting Alicante during the Winter months is perfect, the weather may be cooler than the high season but something about being able to enjoy a cocktail outdoors in January makes all the difference to those UK winter blues!

We enjoyed a wander around the marina and found a bar overlooking the boats, which had excellent cocktails for the great price of €5! This was a great place to do some people watching with an excellent view. We had a stroll on the beach and we also visited the castle. Entrance to the castle via elevator can be found opposite the main beach area. The views were beautiful overlooking both the ocean and behind to the rest of the city, well worth the journey up there. We chose to walk back down from the castle rather than take the elevator, the walk was actually shorter than you’d think, but you come down to the rear of the castle rather than the way you went up at the front.

We explored the famous Mushroom Street and found a fabulous tapas and wine bar called Vino Más were we had our evening meal, the food was delicious and the wine was excellent – I’d fly back to Alicante just to enjoy the tapas at Vino Más! The scallops in particular were my favourite.
So if you’re looking to travel more and you’re looking for a destination to spend a weekend or just a couple of days to preserve that annual leave, Alicante is a great contender, so much so I’m heading back there in December!
